Marriage

Prenuptial & Postnuptial Agreements

A prenuptial agreement is a contract that is signed before the parties are wed that determines what happens to each spouse's individual assets and any joint assets in the event of divorce, separation, or death.  A postnuptial agreement is a similar agreement that is signed after the parties are wed. The contracts generally include instruction regarding property division and spousal maintenance.

Victoria is able to assist you in drafting a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement that will protect and suit your individual needs.  If you are considering entering into one of these agreements, Victoria will help you to properly document your wishes.

Same-Sex Marriages

On June 1, 2014, Illinois legalized same-sex marriages via the Illinois Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.  The act grants full marriage equality in Illinois. Prior to this act, Illinois had the Illinois Civil Union Act which allowed for civil unions of same-sex couples. The Illinois Civil Union Act is still in effect and allows civil unions to be converted to marriage. On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in the entire country.
